With approximately $4.5 trillion in GDP, Japan is the second largest economy in the world. And it has earned this distinction through a combination of strong work ethics, a mastery of high technology, and cooperation between government and industry.
In the 1960s, Japan’s 10% average growth rate was considered nothing short of “miraculous.” Through the ’70s and ’80s, the nation managed to maintain a healthy average of 5% and 4%, respectively. Growth slowed in the 1990s due largely to over-investment during the late 1980s. However, Japan’s GDP growth has become robust again in recent years, often surpassing the growth rates of the United States and European Union.
Major industries in Japan include banking, insurance, real estate, retailing, transportation and telecommunications. Japan also is home to many leading multinational corporations and some of the largest and most technologically advanced producers of motor vehicles, electronic equipment, machine tools, steel and nonferrous metals, ships, chemicals, textiles and processed foods.
Japan’s largest trading partner is China, which exports 21% of its products to the country, while importing 13.4% of Japanese goods. Other major trading partners include the United States, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
One of the best ways to invest in Japan is through a country-specific ETF, such as iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund. To learn more about Japanese investment opportunities, click below.
