Simply put, consumer products are those purchased by final consumers for personal consumption. These include chemically formulated products used by household or institutional consumers such as detergents, cleaning compounds, cosmetics, personal care products, disinfectants, sanitizers, and automotive specialty products.

Companies of all sizes produce such items, but the largest of these (i.e. with market capitalization exceeding $5 billion) tend to be the most stable with low P/E (price to earnings) ratios and offering some of the best stock dividends available. In fact, conservative shareholders often invest in these stocks as a hedge against bear markets and to generate income.
