Switch Into “Trouble Ahead” Mode (Risk-Off)

We moved into our “Risk-On” position yesterday, after being in our “Risk-Off” trade since late January. Today, our model recommends that we move back into that risk-off position. That sudden flip-flopping of positions is not unusual for our model — we’re used to “whipsaw” trades when our model is working to adapt to the market’s twists and turns. What is unusual is that the iPath Series B S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) is being managed by its issuer, British bank Barclays, differently than is typical.

Switch Back Into “All Clear” Mode (Risk-On)

As is typical, our long-volatility trade was a quick one. My model just triggered another switch trade, recommending we move back into the “All Clear” position. We’re still in “whipsaw” territory, so we might need to continue flipping back and forth until our model and the market are in agreement. Either way, all we need to do is follow the model’s signals as they come. So, let’s make that switch trade today.
