Welcome to the great computer chip shortage of 2021. New cars, video game consoles and computer parts are high-profile victims. But earlier this year, Goldman Sachs identified — get this! — 169 industries facing significant disruption due to a lack of small electronic circuits. In an economy as tech-centric as ours, chips seem to go in everything.

Before I get into our video update for today, I want to share an action to take on one of our stocks: Adam O’Dell and I have watched the recent moves in Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage Inc. (NYSE: NGVC). The shares are flirting with our $10 stop-loss. While we still believe in the mega trends supporting this stock — specifically the trend toward healthier living by higher-income millennials — the stock simply isn’t performing as we expected.

Today, I’m eager to share updates on three of our model portfolio companies: an “Imperium” DNA science company, a disruptive pharmaceutical business and a renewable-energy grid enabler.
