After running the numbers, Chief Research Analyst Matt Clark and I have determined there are no Wednesday Windfalls trades this week. We had a valid signal on one of our 15 exchange-traded funds, but while the relative strength index (RSI) was in a good range, its volatility ratio was well above our comfort zone. In our Wednesday Windfalls strategy, Matt and I examine the option’s implied volatility relative to the historical volatility of the underlying equity.

We had three potential signals from the 15 ETFs used in the strategy. However, two of those ETFs have a relative strength index (RSI) reading above our threshold of 50, while the third is in an uptrend today.

I was chatting with a colleague recently about the Japanese economy. We agreed it was the “case study of all case studies” in macroeconomics. Once the poster child for world-dominating growth in the 1980s, Japan’s economic ascent stalled out and gave way to the so-called “Lost Decade” of the ‘90s.

However, only 2 of those were down on Monday. Both of those qualified ETFs had relative strength index (RSI) readings that were well above our threshold of 50.

Just a quick note today as everyone’s waiting on the Fed … A rate cut is all but certain tomorrow. It’s only a matter of its size and, more importantly, the market’s reaction. This cut has been anticipated for quite a while, as the July 11 CPI print showed cooling inflation and paved the way for it.
