Trade Alert: Buy Calls on XLU, MRK & SPWR

Two Mondays ago, the Volatility Index (VIX) was pushing up to 40, making option prices relatively expensive. Today, the VIX is back down in the low 20s. That’s a welcome drop since it makes option prices more reasonable, on average. It’s also earnings season, though. And steep drops in shares of Meta Platforms (FB) and PayPal (PYPL) have individual stock investors on edge. So, some stock options are still richly priced. My system identified a number of “pop” candidates this week.

The stock market was in free fall Monday morning. But it’s since found buyers and edged higher. Frankly, it was astonishing to see the major averages close up on Monday after being down as much as 5% at their noontime lows. I wasn’t surprised to see some retracement of that comeback rally during the Tuesday session. And today, though stocks opened higher, they’re stuck in something of a pregnant pause as everyone waits for the Federal Reserve announcement at 2 p.m. Eastern time.
