A gentle reminder: The market — and our offices — are closed today to observe Memorial Day. We won’t have any trades or a trade wrap this week. Last week, we closed out with a nice net profit thanks to our triple-digit gain on calls on the ProShares VIX Short-Term ETF (NYSE: VIXY). Congratulations on a nice win! It was a sight for sore eyes after what has admittedly been a rough streak of down weeks. I’ve explained before how systematic strategies can be streaky … producing an uncomfortably long string of weekly losses, but also an enjoyably long string of wins. The trick, of course, is maintaining discipline so that you’re in position to capitalize when the wins stack up. There’s no telling for sure if this is the start of a positive streak, but I encourage you to treat each week as a potential winner and do your best to make all the trades.

The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for a tenth time yesterday. We were already out of our weekly trades when the 2 p.m. announcement hit. But, no doubt, the unprecedented speed and intensity of the Fed’s rate-hike cycle since early 2022 have posed a challenge for our strategy. I’ve written a number of times about how I’ve back tested our strategy over a trove of historical market data, which includes bull and bear markets alike. It also includes rate-hike cycles. But, as I said, this cycle has been faster and more aggressive than anything we’ve seen in a long time.
