In 1999, a young UCLA graduate took a trip to Taiwan and saw people standing in line for a drink most Americans had never heard of. Sweet tea. Milk. Chewy tapioca pearls at the bottom of the cup. Bubble tea. He returned to Southern California and, in 2000, opened a tea shop with a friend he’d known since high school.

Today, we’re adding a new stock to our Rogue Portfolio: Rigel Pharmaceuticals Inc. (RIGL). Rigel is a commercial-stage biotech company focused on hematology and cancer, and it has spent the last few years quietly turning itself into a much stronger business. It now has four FDA-approved products in its commercial portfolio, product sales are growing and the company is profitable. Most importantly, the newest piece of that portfolio has only just started contributing.

Last August, a federal agency handed one small American refiner $202.6 million. Not a loan. Not a subsidy. Not a grant. A bill that the company no longer had to pay. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted it a set of small refinery exemptions covering compliance years 2019 through 2024.

In January, the lights went out in Modesto, California. Del Monte had been canning California fruit there for more than 100 years. It canned through the Great Depression. It canned through two world wars. It canned through every diet fad the country ever threw at it. But sadly, it did not can through 2026.

I’ve got a confession to make. Last Sunday, instead of doing anything remotely productive — cleaning the back porch, sweeping the floors, pretending to read the stack of books on my nightstand — I spent three hours playing video games. I’m not a teenager. I’m not even close.
