Welcome to the Thursday edition of Superforecast Trader! We’ve already had an exciting week, of which Matt will get into a little bit later. First, I want to discuss the latest weekly jobless claims figures, which came out this morning… They were a doozy.

The market got a brush of good news this morning.Wholesale prices fell slightly in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, heightening confidence that the Federal Reserve will trim its benchmark interest rate at a meeting later this month.

Last week, we saw a doubleheader of bearish data coming from the jobs market… On the one hand, we saw virtually no new hiring — and on the other, we saw a noticeable uptick in claims for jobless benefits. Does that mean we’re headed into a recession?

Hello, welcome back, and we hope that you had an amazing Labor Day weekend! With this weekend’s holiday, we’ve reached the end of Summer, and a relatively quiet time for job markets. Businesses are locked in a “wait-and-see” when it comes to hiring, but they’re also hesitant to lay anyone off for the downstream risk it might create during the holiday season and beyond.
